Though spring has had some false starts, winter is (hopefully) behind us, which means it’s time to start getting ready for spring thunderstorms and summer heat. Chad Muth, the owner of Muth & Company Roofing, has some helpful tips to assist you in getting your home on the right track now – so you’ll have more time to enjoy the fresh air and warm spring weather later!

Spring Home Improvements Start With an Inspection

Roofs and gutters often take a beating during the harsh winter months, so it’s important to have them inspected before severe storms hit. Fortunately, Muth & Company has Mr. Moose’s Roof Maintenance Plan. We are frequently asked what this program includes. When you take advantage of this special program, we will:

  • Clean out the gutters, re-nail loose gutter spikes, and check for clogged downspouts.

  • Clean, paint, and caulk all flashings.

  • Inspect the attic and evaluate the condition of insulation, bath fans, and vents.

  • Provide you with a complete inspection report.

Other Spring To-Do’s

While the previous tough and sometimes dangerous roofing-related tasks are best left to a professional, the rest of Chad’s tips are all DIY. So get out there and get them done so you’ll have an impeccable home and lawn this spring and summer.

  • Give the windows some attention. Take down the window screens. Give them a good cleaning. Then put them back after thoroughly cleaning the window glass and frame.

  • Inspect the lighting. Check all of your outside lights, including porch lights and floodlights. Be sure to replace any bulbs that are burned out.

  • Give your lawn mower a tune-up. Before mowing for the first time, replace the spark plugs and sharpen the lawn mower blades to ensure a clean cut.

  • Put down some pre-emergent. Kill those pesky weeds before they have a chance to sprout by using a pre-emergent herbicide on your grass. Everybody loves a lush lawn, so don’t put it off!

Add Some Native Plants

Introducing native Central Ohio plants creates a more resilient, low-maintenance landscape that supports local pollinators and improves soil health. Unlike standard grass, these species are adapted to Ohio’s heavy clay soils and seasonal extremes, requiring significantly less water and fertilizer once established.

Plus, native plants offer year-round interest with their changing blooms, textures, and foliage—bringing both beauty and biodiversity right to your backyard. By choosing species like purple coneflower, wild bergamot, or Ohio goldenrod, you’re not just cutting down on mowing and watering time; you’re building a natural habitat for bees, butterflies, and songbirds.

Recommended Native Plants for Central Ohio

  • Trees: Ohio Buckeye, Eastern Redbud, Sugar Maple, Black Gum, Bur Oak, White Fringetree, and PawPaw.
  • Shrubs: Northern Spicebush, Winterberry Holly, Buttonbush, Ninebark, and Black/Red Chokeberry.
  • Perennials & Wildflowers: Purple Coneflower, Swamp Milkweed, Aster, Black-Eyed Susan, Blazing Star, Wild Geranium, Blue False Indigo, and Cardinal Flower.
  • Grasses & Sedges: Little Bluestem, Big Bluestem, Switchgrass, and Palm Sedge.

Be sure to set aside a weekend early this spring to take care of these chores. And don’t forget to give the helpful roofers at Muth & Company a call at (614) 882-0900 to schedule your Mr. Moose’s Roof Maintenance Plan. We’ll climb the ladder to do the dirty work, and you can sit back, relax, and enjoy spring in our fair city!
