We Recycle

Doing Our Part by Recycling Used Shingles

recycle - shingle grinder"In 20 years, I saw the landfill go from being four stories deep to four stories high," says Chad Muth, president of Muth & Company Roofing. "I felt strongly that this wasn't good, and I was going to do something about it."

With more than 11 million asphalt shingles entering U.S. landfills every year, it is estimated that roofing debris makes up as much as 10% of landfill volume. The problem is that asphalt shingles are made to endure and do not decompose quickly.

Muth & Company Roofing is taking steps to combat this growing problem. We participate in a “Roof to Road” recycling program that promotes converting used asphalt shingles into asphalt used to pave America’s streets and highways. We deliver used asphalt shingles on a regular basis to a recycling facility in Williamsport, Ohio.

GAF Certified Green Roofer Program

GAF Certified Green Roofer "Roof to Road" Tonnage Report, 2011-2015:

2011: 838 tons

2012: 1,343 tons

2013: 947 tons

2014: 1,569 tons

2015: 597 tons

TOTAL YEAR TO DATE = 5,294 tons recycled

Not only is shingle recycling an environmental benefit by reducing landfill volume, using recycled asphalt can reduce the overall costs of paving a road. But we don't stop there. We make an effort to recycle metal and aluminum materials that we remove from gutters and other home building products. And, of course, we're active recyclers in our office as well as our homes.
