Preparing for Winter: Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

September is a month of change. As the warm days of late summer slowly transition to the cooler weather of early fall, it’s the perfect time to prepare your home for the coming winter months. To get your home in shape and make it as comfortable as possible this winter, take the time to complete the following fall maintenance tasks.

Preparing for Winter: Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

  • Store air conditioning units. Now that the weather’s cooled down, it’s time to remove any window A/C units in your home. Leaving them in your window over winter is not a good idea. Cold air will leak in through the gaps around the unit, and warm air from your home can escape. Freezing temperatures can also cause irreparable damage to the unit itself. Once the A/C unit is removed, it should be stored somewhere warm and dry.

  • Check weather stripping. If you’re fortunate enough to have newer energy-efficient doors or double-pane windows, weatherstripping is often unnecessary. However, it’s extremely important for homes with older windows and doors that tend to leak. When applied around the frames, weatherstripping will help retain heat and stop drafts. It does wear out eventually, so take the time this fall to check your weatherstripping and replace it as needed.

  • Tune up the furnace and clean the fireplace. Before firing up your furnace, make sure to have an HVAC professional give it a good cleaning and tune-up. If you use a fireplace to heat your home, have it inspected and cleaned to remove excess creosote, which can build up in the chimney and cause fires. If you don’t yet have a chimney cap, check into getting one installed to contain embers and keep out animals.

  • Inspect the roof. Fall is a great time to give your roof a once-over and make necessary roof repairs to help prevent the need for expensive emergency repairs later. While it’s certainly possible to do a roof inspection on your own, it’s always wiser (and safer) to take advantage of professional roof inspection services like the Mr. Moose Roof Maintenance Plan, formerly our Extended Service Plan, offered by Muth & Company Roofing. For a small annual fee, we will not only thoroughly inspect your roof, but also do the dirty work of cleaning out your gutters.
