Don’t overlook the spring maintenance of cleaning and repairing your gutters.
If not properly maintained, blocked and overflowing gutters can damage your roof, fascia, soffits, and even your home’s foundation.
Take the necessary steps to ensure your gutter system functions correctly.
Clean debris from the roof and remove it from the gutters
Wind and storms blow all kinds of debris into your gutters. Before you start cleaning them, make sure the roof is clear, as debris left on the roof will wash into your clean gutters during the next storm.
Use a sturdy step ladder or extension ladder to remove leaves and small twigs by hand, and be sure to wear work gloves. Alternatively, you can use a gutter scoop or another gutter cleaning tool.
Before rinsing out gutters, we recommend removing the elbow from the drop. This prevents debris from entering the downspout or underground drains and causing major clogs. Use a trigger-style nozzle that can easily hook onto the edge of the gutter as you move the ladder along.
Check for damage while spring gutter cleaning
While cleaning gutters, watch for holes and other damage such as sagging, corrosion, and loose or missing fasteners.
Caulk small holes and tighten or replace fasteners. If the damage is extensive and you need gutter replacement, call Muth & Company Roofing for the best service and quality products.
